Sexual Health and You

Did you know that a healthy sex life adds years to your life?

Healthly Sex with Sex ToysYour sexual health is important regardless of your age. The first thought, when confronted with a diminished sex life, is “My partner no longer loves me.  He doesn’t find me attractive anymore.”  That thought often escalates into problems with your relationship.  Less sex isn’t necessarily due to your partner’s lack of interest.  It could be an underlying health issue.  Communication with your partner is important at any time.  However, if you are experiencing difficulties with your sex life, communication is crucial.

Health & Mental Issues Can Make Sex Difficult

Difficulties with sex can be caused by a variety of issues, sometimes physiological rather than physical.  It can be something as simple as you getting close to his friends.  This, in turn, can make your man feel less masculine or like he has no one to confide in about relationship issues.  This type of situation can result in erectile dysfunction as a physiological response.  Erectile Dysfunction (ED) affects approximately 20% of men in the United States.

Many conditions can lead to Erectile Dysfunction.  ED could be a physical response to free radicals destroying nitric oxide production.  Nitric oxide has a very important role in a man’s sex life.  It helps to dilate blood vessels, which sends the blood flow to the penis to create an erection.  There are several ways to increase antioxidant production, and aid in erection, such as consuming blueberries, walnuts or coffee and participating in a regular exercise routine.

Did you know that testosterone levels can be affected by diabetes, heart disease or obesity?  In turn, low testosterone levels can decrease sexual desire and make it more difficult to achieve an erection.  How can all of these conditions affect testosterone levels?  They interfere with inflammation, hormones and blood flow that are necessary for intercourse.  Also, antidepressants can lower testosterone levels to the point that an erection is not easy to achieve.  Studies show that one antidepressant, Wellbutrin, does not lower testosterone.

Are you aware of the fact that testosterone levels decrease by .5% each year after the age of 40?

Don’t get discouraged by this fact.  It just means that you need to make some adjustments to enhance your sex life after age 40.  Some great ways to do this are more foreplay, a rest period in between bouts of marathon sex, experimenting with lingerie and sex toys, or a trip to the doctor.

Many people are embarrassed by talking to their doctor or partner about sexual dysfunction but it is necessary in order to get to the root of the problem and to preserve your sexual health.  Sex after 40 changes, but it’s up to you how you handle those changes.  Extend your life by enhancing your sex life with adult toys and lingerie.  Take charge of your sex life instead of letting your body take charge of you!
